Hellenic League joins in the celebration of Roger Sansom’s 50 years of service to Lydney Town FC

To celebrate a remarkable 50 years dedicated to his club, Lydney Town FC, a surprise ceremony has bestowed upon Roger Sansom one of the greatest honours any club servant could receive recognition for his outstanding devotion and loyal service.

The clubhouse was filled to capacity with members, colleagues, and friends from across the football community, including representatives from our own League, as Roger was surprised to learn that from this day forward, the ground would proudly bear the name “Sansom Park.”

The Gloucestershire Northern Senior League and the Hellenic League join together in offering their warmest congratulations to Roger on this incredible milestone. His five decades of tireless commitment have helped shape not only Lydney Town FC but also the wider grassroots game in Gloucestershire and beyond.

    League Chairman’s Comment:

“Roger’s commitment to Lydney Town FC and to grassroots football as a whole is truly inspirational. For 50 years, he has given his time, energy, and heart to the game, shaping not only his club but the wider football community around him. The naming of Sansom Park is a wonderful and fitting tribute to a man whose dedication stands as an example to us all. On behalf of the Hellenic League, I offer my heartfelt congratulations and deepest respect, a truly remarkable achievement

  • Saturday Round-Up: 4th October Goals, Drama, and Late Action Across the Hellenic!

Saturday Round-Up: 4th October Goals, Drama, and Late Action Across the Hellenic!

Another wild Saturday in the Hellenic League saw comebacks, late goals, and enough talking points to keep the clubhouse buzzing. From high-scoring thrillers to gritty draws, here’s how the weekend unfolded.

    Hellenic Premier Division

    Corsham Town 2–1 Hereford Pegasus

Corsham hit back after the break to turn things around, with Lewis Gilchrist and Nick McCootie cancelling out Rory Thompson’s opener. The game we hear was played in very good sprits.

    Cribbs 2–3 Slimbridge

Slimbridge produced the comeback of the day, three goals in the second half and late chaos saw them snatch the win after trailing at the break.

Droitwich Spa 2–1 Royal Wootton Bassett Town

Early goals from Tilley and Moss did the damage for Spa, who held firm as Bassett pushed hard late on.

    Fairford Town 0–0 Worcester Raiders

A goalless draw, but both sides defended like their lives depended on it. Clean sheets all round.

    Hallen 3–2 Cinderford Town

Five goals and plenty of drama. Hallen edged it with early strikes and some determined defending late on.

    Highworth Town 4–0 Westfields

Highworth were ruthless, running riot in a dominant display that keeps their momentum rolling. Westfields had no reply.

    Lydney Town 2–2 Longlevens

An end-to-end contest saw the points shared after four goals and some superb attacking play.

Pershore Town 1–3 Roman Glass St George

Laurent Wilson’s double and a late Stoneman strike sealed it for Roman Glass, who were clinical on the road. Pershore grabbed a goal and fought hard.

    Thornbury Town 2–2 Mangotsfield United

A crazy finish, goals in the 97th and 98th minutes meant both sides left equally relieved and exhausted. Tired legs may have been a factor in two later goals less than a minute apart.

    Tuffley Rovers 0–2 Cirencester Town

An early strike from Harlie Price set the tone before Alfonso Dias wrapped things up late. Solid, professional, job done.

    Hellenic Division One

    Alcester Town 1–0 Ludlow Town

A single first-half goal from Adam Bourn was enough as Alcester got it done in businesslike fashion.

Brimscombe & Thrupp 2–1 Thames United Reserves

Late heroics from Terry Francis in stoppage time secured the win after a tough battle.

    Carterton 5–2 Malmesbury Victoria

Goals, goals, goals! Carterton were flying, with braces from Fullerton and McGhee-Parsons lighting up the afternoon.

Chipping Sodbury Town 0–2 Bewdley Town

Bewdley were clinical, taking their chances well to silence the home crowd.

    Clanfield 85 1–1 Shortwood United

A big step forward for Clanfield as they earned a hard-fought point with Tyraiq Hunt’s late equaliser well deserved after a gritty performance, a team that were for sure a team to watch this season after previous seasons performances.

    Newent Town 2–4 Wantage Town

Wantage were lethal in front of goal, with Whelan and Crook leading the charge in an entertaining six-goal clash.

    Redditch Borough 3–1 Stonehouse Town

A hat-trick from Jamie Install saw Borough cruise to victory, job done in style.

    Wellington 4–5 Cheltenham Saracens

The game of the day! Nine goals, chaos, and late drama, Saracens edged a thriller where defences definitely took the afternoon off.

    Hellenic Alliance

In the Alliance East, UDA Glos Dev edged Clanfield Reserves 3–2 in the West. Wins too for Wantage Town U23s and Mangotsfield United Dev in a busy day across the divisions.

Another weekend of late drama, goalfests, and a few hard-earned draws, just the way we like it in the Hellenic! Not much planned action midweek, but keep an eye out for the games that are playing. Next Saturday sees an action packed fixture list.

  • Alliance Round Up Table Review

    Alliance Round Up Table Review

    Alliance East round up

Marlow FC Reserves sit proudly at the top of the Alliance East, unbeaten in their opening four games and boasting 10 points. But it’s Hungerford Town Reserves who have stolen the early headlines, smashing in a staggering 26 goals in just three outings. With a game in hand on the leaders, they’re the team everyone’s watching.

Eversley & California and Headington Amateurs are keeping pace too, both with six points on the board. Headington in particular look dangerous, two games, two wins, and yet to taste defeat. Easington Sports and Banbury United Development are hovering just behind, waiting to kick-start their campaigns.

At the other end, it’s already looking bleak for Kidlington Development and Hambleden, both winless and leaking goals at an alarming rate. Hambleden’s defence has been torn apart, conceding 24 in just three matches, while Kidlington have shipped 18 themselves. Penn & Tylers Green and Ardley United Reserves have at least managed to get off the mark, but both remain searching for that elusive first win.

    Alliance West around up

Carterton FC Development are top of the pile in the Alliance West after three games, unbeaten and sitting on seven points. But their grip on first is anything but secure, with University of Bristol and Wantage Town U23 breathing right down their necks.

The Students have impressed with two wins from three, boasting a healthy +6 goal difference, while Wantage have been clinical, two games, two wins, and looking like serious contenders if they can keep up the momentum.

Clanfield (85) Reserves sit mid-table with four points, steady but inconsistent, while Mangotsfield United Development and Highworth Town Reserves both hover on three points, still trying to find their rhythm.

At the other end, Bourton Rovers and Evesham United Reserves have at least got off the mark, but UDA Glos Development and Newent Town Development are stuck at the bottom with zero points and leaky defences

  • Saracens Set the Pace but Chasing Pack Refuse to Blink

Saracens Set the Pace but Chasing Pack Refuse to Blink

Cheltenham Saracens are top of the pile — but only just. Seven wins from nine have them setting the early pace in Division One, yet Redditch Borough, Bewdley Town and Newent Town are all lurking just two points behind and ready to pounce. One slip and the lot could change overnight.

Redditch are flying, boasting the division’s best goal difference at +12, while Bewdley and Newent are matching them stride for stride with six wins apiece. It’s a three-way chase breathing down Saracens’ necks — and the title race is already looking fierce.

Behind them, Malmesbury Victoria, FC Stratford and Ludlow Town are keeping the pressure on, all within four points of top spot. With games in hand and momentum on their side, none of the chasing pack can be ruled out.

At the wrong end, it’s looking grim for Thame United Reserves and Clanfield 85, both stuck on four points and struggling for form. Wellington and Shortwood United aren’t faring much better, rooted in the bottom four and already staring at a long, hard season.

Big Storyline: Saracens may be leading now, but with three teams tied on 19 points, the table could be ripped wide open in a single weekend. Expect fireworks

  • Title Race on a Knife Edge as Slimbridge Circle the Leaders

Title Race on a Knife Edge as Slimbridge Circle the Leaders

The Hellenic League Premier Division is bubbling up nicely and we’ve got a proper title scrap on our hands. Roman Glass St George and Droitwich Spa are locked together on 26 points at the top, but it’s Glass who just shade it thanks to their extra game in hand and a slightly sharper goal difference.

But the story doesn’t end there. Slimbridge, sitting pretty in third, have only played nine games and already racked up 22 points with a monster +18 goal difference. If the Swans keep soaring, they could leapfrog the lot and blow this title race wide open.

Westfields and Worcester Raiders aren’t going away either. Raiders, in particular, look dangerous: just eight matches played, six wins on the board, and goals flying in left, right and centre. Don’t bet against them making a serious charge once the fixture backlog clears.

At the wrong end, Hallen are still searching for that elusive first win, bottom with just two points from nine. Lydney Town are leaking goals like a sieve, Cribbs can’t find their rhythm, and Royal Wootton Bassett are nervously glancing over their shoulders.

It’s shaping up to be a season where consistency is king and with the chasing pack breathing down their necks, Roman Glass and Droitwich know one slip could flip the table on its head. The title race? Far from settled. In fact, it’s only just catching fire.

  • Top of the Table: New Faces, New Stories

Top of the Table: New Faces, New Stories

    This Year’s Leaders:

    • Cheltenham Saracens are the new pace-setters, sitting top with 21 points from 9 games. Last year, they were mid-table at this stage—what a turnaround!
    • Redditch Borough, Bewdley Town, and Newent Town are all tied on 19 points, hot on the leaders’ heels. Redditch and Bewdley were both in the mix last year, but Newent have made a huge leap from 16th to 4th!

    Last Year’s Leaders:

    • Droitwich Spa were untouchable, unbeaten with 22 points from 8 games and a monstrous +28 goal difference. They’ve since moved up a division, leaving the title race wide open for new contenders.

📈 Biggest Risers & Surprise Packages

    • Cheltenham Saracens: From 12th last year to 1st now arguably the story of the season so far!
    • Newent Town: From the relegation zone to the promotion chase. Their 19 points and +9 goal difference are a world away from last year’s 3 points and -11.
    • FC Stratford & Ludlow Town: Both have climbed into the top 7, showing real consistency.

    📉 Falling Stars & Strugglers

    • Clanfield 85: Last year, they were 6th with 12 points from 6. This year? 17th with just 4 points from 8. Ouch.
    • Shortwood United & Wellington: Both have slipped from mid-table safety to the relegation zone, struggling for wins and leaking goals.
    • Thame United Reserves: New to the league and finding it tough, with just 4 points from 10.

    ⚔️ Mid-Table Madness

    • Malmesbury Victoria, Woodford United, Brimscombe & Thrupp, Chipping Sodbury Town, Wantage Town: All are in the thick of it, separated by just a few points. Any of these could make a late surge or get dragged into a scrap.

    🏁 What’s Changed?

    • More Competition at the Top: Last year, Droitwich Spa were running away with it. This year, it’s a real dogfight, just 5 points separate the top 7!
    • New Contenders: Teams like Cheltenham Saracens and Newent Town have shaken up the established order.
    • Tighter Relegation Battle: The bottom five are all struggling, but a couple of wins could change everything.

    Summary:

This season’s Hellenic League Division One is wide open, unpredictable, and packed with storylines. The old guard have moved on or slipped down, and new heroes are emerging. If you love a league where anyone can beat anyone, this is the one to watch! Table review vs this time in season 24/25. • Prem Table Review!

    Prem Table Review!

🚀 Roman Glass St George: Flying High!

Sitting pretty at the top, Roman Glass St George are the team to beat. With 7 wins and 2 draws from 9 games, they’re unbeaten and have a goal difference that says, “Catch us if you can!” Their attacking flair and solid defence have made them the early pacesetters.

🥈 Droitwich Spa: Hot on Their Heels

Just three points behind, Droitwich Spa are keeping the pressure on. They’ve played a game more, but with 6 wins and only 2 losses, they’re proving they’re no pushovers. Can they keep up the chase?

    🥉 Slimbridge: The Dark Horses

Slimbridge have quietly crept into third, boasting 6 wins from 7 and a whopping +16 goal difference. They’re the league’s entertainers, if you want goals, watch Slimbridge!

    🔥 Mid-Table Mayhem

Hereford Pegasus, Corsham Town, Worcester Raiders, Tuffley Rovers, and Westfields are all bunched up, separated by just a few points. Any of these sides could make a charge for the top spots if they find consistency.

    ⚠️ Trouble at the Bottom

It’s looking grim for Hallen and Lydney Town, who are still searching for their first win. Lydney, in particular, have a goal difference of -23, ouch! Cribbs and Royal Wootton Bassett Town are also hovering dangerously close to the drop zone.

    ⚽ Ones to Watch

Worcester Raiders: Only 6 games played but already 5 wins, could they be the league’s sleeping giants?

Mangotsfield United & Pershore Town: Both have shown flashes of brilliance and could climb quickly with a good run.

The Hellenic League is serving up classic non-league chaos, big wins, shock results, and a table that’s tighter than a new pair of boots. Will Roman Glass St George keep soaring, or will Droitwich Spa and Slimbridge catch them? Stay tuned, because this title race is just getting started! With week and weeks of football left, its the best time of year!

  • That’s a Wrap! What a Finals Day for the Hellenic League!

That’s a Wrap! What a Finals Day for the Hellenic League!

And just like that… the curtain falls on another epic Hellenic League season – and what a way to sign off! Finals Day was packed with drama, emotion, and a little slice of history too.

First up – the Bateman Sports Chairman’s Final:

Swindon Supermarine Dev vs University of Bristol. Swindon arrived having played four games in seven days (seriously, their laundry bills must be sky-high), and though they battled hard, University of Bristol’s energy and sharp finishing saw them crowned cup champions.

But beyond the result, this fixture was a landmark moment for the Hellenic League. For the first time ever in a final, the entire match officiating team was female – and they were absolutely outstanding. Hats off to referee Imogen Hooper, assistant referees Rosie Johns and Ava Jordan, and fourth official Lola Pollard. A brilliant showcase of the incredible female talent rising through the ranks. The bar has officially been raised!

Then came the big one: The Marsh Challenge Cup Final

League champions Hartpury took on Worcester Raiders in a game that had everything… except goals. 90 minutes of action, passion, and goal-line scrambles, but nothing to separate the sides. So, of course, we went to penalties – the footballing equivalent of roulette.

In a heart-stopping sudden death finish, Hartpury held their nerve and edged it to complete a memorable double. Tough luck to Worcester Raiders – you pushed them all the way and deserve huge credit.

Massive thanks to Mangotsfield United for hosting the finals – a brilliant venue with top-class hospitality. We’re still thinking about those half-time snacks…

And of course, a huge thank you to our league sponsors, without whom days like this wouldn’t be possible:

Uhlsport – our main league sponsor Marsh, Bateman Sports, and Wiseman Lighting – for sponsoring our cup competitions and backing grassroots football in style

Now, it’s time to hang up the boots (briefly), give the washing machines a break, and enjoy a well-earned rest. But don’t get too comfy…

Keep your eyes on the Hellenic League events calendar for key dates – including the AGM, which is now online and expected to be held virtually. Get that date in your diary (no Zoom filters, please).

To all our champions – in league, play-off and cup competitions – congratulations! You’ve earned every bit of glory. And to every single club, volunteer, and match official who made this season possible – thank you. You are the heartbeat of this league.

That’s a wrap on 2024/25. Rest up. We go again soon. Up the Hellenic!

  • Hellenic League Finals Day

    Hellenic League Finals Day

Well it’s been an action packed day.. not one, but TWO Hellenic League finals have been played today.

The Marsh Supplementary Cup and the Bateman Sports Presidents Cup.

Wantage Town took on Stonehouse Town, in the first fixture and looked to be on the back foot at 30seconds had gone and were a goal down. Most hadn’t even had a sip of their drink by this point. Some were still starting there watches! However they came back and fora large part of the game were equal. Both teams had chances and went in at half time having not only drawn level but taken the lead!! 2-1

The start of the second half the balance shifted more to Wantage, when referee Mawgan Andrew produced a red card to Stonehouse for a DOGSO offence. Stonehouse then put everything in to the game. Going two at the back, and then got a goal to make it 2-2 taking this game to penalties.

The drama continued and then after 3 penalties each, the Stonehouse keeper guessed right and saved a Wantage penalty. Stonehouse never missed and took the Win! Ten men Stonehouse were crowned Champions 24/25

In our second game of the day, Gloucester City dev, playing as UDA Gloucester vs Aston Clinton. This game was a battle from the start, then UDA took the lead and never looked back. The game got further and further away from Aston, but to their credit dug in deep. Matters got worse for them when they were also reduced to 10men for a SIN BIN offence, referee Coby Woodly not liking the words directed at him. However the game was for from reach for Aston Clinton with the game ending 8-0. UDA were crowned champions.

Well done to all the teams today, you all worked so hard to get to the finals, and as with our loved sports, there is a winner and a runner up. But credit to you all!

Huge thank you to all the supporters who joined us today at Cirencester Town. Amazing hosts to our cup finals.

    Enjoy the rest!!

Looking forward to bank holiday Monday the 5th when we play our next set of finals. Check out the website for details, all updates will be via our X account – @hellenicleague
