    Hellenic League Season Bursts Into Life With Goals, Drama and Early Pace-Setters

    The new Hellenic League season has wasted no time delivering excitement, with the opening fortnight producing goals galore, unbeaten runs, surprise results and several early contenders staking their claim at the top of the table.

    With the Premier Division and Division One now underway, supporters have already been treated to some eye-catching performances and if the opening weeks are anything to go by, this promises to be a season full of twists and turns.

    Pegasus Flying High

    One of the biggest early stories has been the sensational start made by Hereford Pegasus.

    Pegasus opened their Premier Division campaign with a 2-1 victory over Cribbs before producing another impressive performance four days later, beating Stourport Swifts 3-1. They then made it three wins from three on August 15, edging past Longlevens 1-0.

    Nine points from their opening three league matches puts Pegasus firmly among the early pace-setters, with a perfect start providing plenty of optimism for their supporters.

    Their opening run has been built on consistency rather than spectacular score lines, but three wins from three is exactly the sort of foundation that can turn a promising start into a serious promotion challenge.

    Bradford Make Their Mark

    Bradford Town also began with a statement of intent.

    They dispatched Cinderford Town 2-0 on the opening day before turning on the style against Royal Wootton Bassett, cruising to a 4-0 victory.

    That made it six points from two games and eight goals scored without conceding a single goal.

    There was, however, a twist on August 15 when Bradford travelled to Highworth Town and suffered a 1-0 defeat. It was their first setback of the campaign, but the opening two performances had already established Bradford as a team capable of making plenty of noise this season.

    Westfields and Malmesbury Trade Blows

    Westfields have also enjoyed a strong opening to league life.

    A 2-1 away victory at Malmesbury Victoria was followed by a 3-1 win at Longlevens, giving Westfields maximum points from their opening two league fixtures.

    Malmesbury, meanwhile, endured a difficult opening day before responding emphatically.

    After losing 2-1 to Westfields, they bounced back in spectacular fashion against Highworth Town, hammering their opponents 4-1. The result demonstrated just how quickly fortunes can change in the Hellenic League.

    Cinderford’s Incredible Response

    Cinderford Town have already experienced the full emotional rollercoaster of the opening weeks.

    They began with a 2-0 defeat at Bradford, then responded with a narrow 1-0 victory over Droitwich Spa.

    But on August 15 came an emphatic statement: Cinderford demolished Hallen 5-1.

    Five different goals? Not necessarily the data doesn’t provide scorers, but the score line alone tells the story. After taking three points from their first three matches, Cinderford suddenly have plenty of momentum.

    Goals Everywhere in Division One

    If the Premier Division has provided drama, Division One has delivered goals by the bucketload.

    Wantage Town have been one of the early headline-makers. After a narrow 1-0 win at Bromyard Town, they suffered a 3-1 defeat at Carterton before producing an extraordinary response.

    They smashed Redditch Borough 8-1, one of the biggest results of the opening weeks, before following it up with a 3-1 victory over Shortwood United.

    That gives Wantage three wins from four league matches and a remarkable 13 goals scored.

    Cheltenham Saracens have also made an impressive start. They opened with a 2-1 win over Redditch Borough, demolished Studley 4-0 and then beat Newent Town 3-0. Their perfect opening run finally came to an end on August 15, when they were beaten 2-1 by Brimscombe & Thrupp.

    Supermarine Reserves Bring the Firepower

    Another side turning heads is Swindon Supermarine Reserves.

    They opened with a 5-1 demolition of Shortwood United and followed that with a 4-1 victory over Stonehouse Town.

    The reserves were then brought back down to earth by Studley, who produced a 3-2 win on August 8, before Sharpness edged them 2-1 on August 15.

    Even so, their opening four matches have shown plenty of attacking threat, and their 11 goals underline just how dangerous they can be going forward.

    Sharpness Make Their Presence Felt

    Sharpness have quietly put together an intriguing opening spell.

    They began with a stunning 5-1 victory at Carterton, then had their scheduled match against Shortwood United postponed. A 1-1 draw with Lydney Town followed before they travelled to Swindon Supermarine Reserves and secured a 2-1 win.

    It may still be early days, but Sharpness have already demonstrated that they will not be an easy opponent.

    Crowds Turn Out

    The opening weeks have also produced encouraging attendances across the league.

    Bradford Town’s opening-day clash with Cinderford attracted 228 spectators, while their midweek meeting with Royal Wootton Bassett drew 226.

    Droitwich Spa’s home match against Cinderford attracted 241, while Hereford Pegasus welcomed 202 for their victory over Stourport Swifts.

    The strongest recorded attendance came outside the league, with 353 watching Wokingham Town defeat Corsham Town 2-0 in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round.

    Those numbers underline the appetite for football as the new campaign gets underway.

    A Season Already Full of Promise

    The opening fortnight has delivered almost everything a new season could ask for: unbeaten starts, big wins, unexpected defeats and dramatic swings in momentum.

    Hereford Pegasus have emerged as an early Premier Division force, while Bradford Town, Westfields and Cinderford Town have all shown enough to suggest they could be involved in the battle at the sharp end.

    In Division One, Wantage Town, Cheltenham Saracens, Alcester Town and Lydney Town have all made strong early impressions, while the likes of Swindon Supermarine Reserves and Sharpness have shown they possess serious attacking potential.

    And with the league campaign still in its infancy, there is one thing already certain:

    The Hellenic League season is up and running, and it is showing no signs of slowing down.

    As part of our ongoing commitment to improving league operations, enhancing communication, and increasing supporter engagement, the League has listened carefully to feedback from clubs and adapted its processes to meet the evolving needs of the modern game.

    Following the lead of many leagues across the National League System, the Hellenic Football League has partnered with Football Web Pages to introduce a streamlined live match reporting solution that will transform the way match information is captured and shared.

    The new platform will replace the League’s long-standing 60-Minute Score Reporting Form and provide supporters, clubs, players and officials with real-time access to scores, team line-ups, goals, substitutions, disciplinary information and key match events as they happen.

    This exciting collaboration combines the Hellenic Football League’s commitment to delivering a first-class competition with Football Web Pages’ industry-leading expertise in live football reporting and digital engagement.

    League Officer Craig Davenport said:

    “This partnership represents a significant step forward for the Hellenic Football League. Football supporters increasingly expect instant access to match information, and this new system allows our clubs to deliver exactly that. By working together with Football Web Pages, we are improving visibility for our clubs, enhancing the supporter experience, and modernising our matchday operations.”

    Through the Football Web Pages Live Scores platform, supporters will be able to follow matches across the League in real time via the Football Web Pages website and mobile applications, bringing the excitement of matchday directly to fans wherever they are.

    The platform has been designed with simplicity and accessibility in mind. Operating through a mobile-friendly website, there is no requirement to download an application, allowing clubs to provide updates quickly and efficiently from the touchline.

    Home clubs will be responsible for providing live updates for League fixtures, ensuring accurate and timely information reaches supporters throughout the season. Clubs are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the system during pre-season and make full use of the testing facilities available.

    The partnership demonstrates a shared ambition between the Hellenic Football League and Football Web Pages to embrace innovation while supporting clubs in delivering a better experience for players, officials and supporters alike.

    Together, the two organisations are creating a stronger digital future for football across the Hellenic Football League.

    Entering the final straight !!

    Champions declared in both the UHL Premier Division and the UHL Division One. Massive congratulations to Premier Division Champions Slimbridge and Division One Champions FC Stratford.

    The Isuzu FA Vase semi-finals second leg took place last Saturday and UHL Premier Division Hallen who were 3-0 down from the first leg travelled away to play AFC Stoneham of the Velocity Wessex League Premier Division. AFC Stoneham scored a further 3 goals v Hallen’s 1 and duly won 6-1 on aggregate. They go on to face Cockfosters in the Final at Wembley. Hallen had a great journey in the Cup and deserve a massive congratulations for the progress they made.

    In the UHL Premier Division last Saturday, league leaders Slimbridge travelled to play-off contenders Cirencester Town and were beaten 2-0. 2nd place Worcester Raiders hosted Fairford Town and were beaten 1-0, Roman Glass St George had no game, Droitwich Spa travelled to Longlevens and won 1-0, Corsham Town hosted Pershore Town and also won 1-0. Cinderford Town and Hereford Pegasus shared a high scoring 4-4 draw, Tuffley Rovers travelled to Cribbs and despite scoring in the 6th minute had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Mangotsfield United v Royal Wootton Bassett Town ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw, Highworth Town travelled to Westfields and lost 2-1, Thornbury Town hosted bottom club Lydney Town and won 1-0. On bank holiday Monday, top placed Slimbridge travelled to Tuffley Rovers and despite going 1-0 down and then 2-1 down came back to win 3-2, duly sewing up the Premier Division Title. 2nd placed Worcester Raiders travelled to near-by Pershore Town and won 2-1, Roman Glass St George hosted near neighbours Cribbs and won 2-0 to leapfrog Droitwich Spa into 3rd place, Droitwich Spa hosted Hereford Pegasus in a repeat of the UHL Challenge Cup Final and lost 5-3 in an 8-goal thriller in which Pegasus’s Jordan Williamson scored 4 goals. Cirencester Town travelled to Hallen and won 1-0, Corsham Town hosted Fairford Town and won 1-0 with a 94th minute winner, Cinderford Town hosted Lydney Town in the Forest Derby and won 4-0, Mangotsfield United v Thornbury Town in the Bristol Derby finished 1-1, Highworth Town made the short journey to Royal Wootton Bassett Town and won 4-2, Longlevens v Westfields ended 0-0. We now await the play-offs and which teams will secure their places with massively important games still to play to see who from the current 2nd placed to the current 6th placed team finish in those 4 play-off places.

    In UHL Division One on Saturday, one of the results of the season saw league leaders FC Stratford travel to bottom club Thame United Reserves and lose 1-0. Wantage Town hosted Shortwood United and won 4-3 in a 7-goal thriller, Bewdley Town hosted Newent Town and lost 2-1, Stonehouse Town made the long journey to Alcester Town and lost 2-0, Malmesbury Victoria hosted Cheltenham Saracens and won 1-0, In-form Brimscombe & Thrupp hosted Wellington and won 5-1, Redditch Borough made the long trip to Clanfield 85 and lost 3-1, Ludlow Town hosted Woodford United and won 3-2, Carterton travelled to Chipping Sodbury Town and won 3-2. On Monday, FC Stratford returned to winning ways and won the Title with a 3-1 away win v Alcester Town. Wantage Town travelled the short distance to Carterton and the game ended 1-1, Bewdley Town hosted Ludlow Town and drew 0-0, Stonehouse Town also returned to winning ways and beat Wellington 4-0 at home with Josh Beadle hitting a 2nd half hattrick. Cheltenham Saracens v Malmesbury Victoria ended 1-1, Newent Town hosted Shortwood United and lost 1-0, Redditch Borough hosted Woodford United and won 2-0, Clanfield 85 added to their Saturday win by beating Thame United Reserves 1-0. On Wednesday we had a 2-2 draw in the Redditch Borough v Shortwood United game. On Thursday, we had some crucial games which saw Bewdley Town travel to Newent Town and win 4-1 and we also saw Malmesbury Victoria host Brimscombe & Thrupp and win 3-0. As in the Premier Division, places in the play-offs are being competed for until the end of the season. Getting the results to finish in either 2nd or 3rd place and then play at home is a defining factor also.

    In the Alliance East on Saturday, Headington Amateurs travelled to Ardley United Res and won 6-0. In mid-week, Banbury United FC Dev travelled to Ardley United Res and won 5-2.

    In the Alliance West in mid-week, Bourton Rovers Dev travelled to Clanifield (85) Res and won 3-1. UDA Glos Dev travelled to Newent Town Dev and won 1-0.

    As we head into the weekend, FC Stratford sit top with 62 points from 25 games—a solid position, with Wantage breathing down their necks on 55 points after 26 games. Bewdley Town are also pushing hard, 54 points from just 24 games, meaning every point is vital for them. Stonehouse Town, in fourth, have played only 23 games, so they’ve got a real chance to leap up if they keep that momentum. Cheltenham Saracens currently hold the last playoff spot, fifth, with 39 points from 24 games—so a lot still to play for.

    • Cheltenham Saracens vs. Wellington
    Cheltenham Saracens have been in decent form, two wins, two draws, one loss in their last five but they’ll need to keep that up against Wellington, who are just above the relegation zone. Every point could be a lifeline.


    • Wantage Town vs. Alcester Town

    At home, Wantage will be keen to keep their promotion dream alive, two wins and two draws in their last five, so momentum is with them. Alcester, though, have struggled with three losses in their last five, so Wantage will be looking to pounce on that. With the new 4g at wantage town this game is for sure to be on!


    • Thame United Reserves vs. Chipping Sodbury
    Tame may be bottom, but they’re not giving up two draws in the last five. Chipping Sodbury, in 12th, also haven’t had a great run just one win in their last five, so this could be a scrappy, hard-fought battle.


    • Redditch Borough vs. Shortwood United
    Redditch are quietly dangerous seventh, 35 points from just 21 games. Shortwood United, in 16th, have lost three in their last five so Redditch will be hoping to grab another big win and keep climbing.

    Hold onto your hats—this season is tighter than your shin pads after a muddy match! Worcester Raiders are top with 58 points (and a goal difference so good, it could probably score a goal on its own). Right behind them, Droitwich Spa are snapping at their heels with 57 points—like a dog chasing a ball, just one point behind! Roman Glass, in third, have 55 points but a few extra games—so they’re like the tortoise in this epic promotion race.

    Slimbridge (our plucky fourth place) and Corsham Town (fifth) are also in the mix, proving that every game counts—like a penalty shootout in the last minute.

    • Worcester Raiders vs. Tuffley Rovers
    Raiders will aim to stretch their lead, but Tuffley are sitting in seventh, who are no pushovers. A bit like David versus Goliath, except both are wearing studs. Lets keep them in the ground please.

    Fairford will fancy their chances, Cribbs are bottom, like a footballer stuck in their boots, but never under estimate a team like Cribbs. One thing is for sure manage Sam Collier will want to forget the 5-2 loss midweek and get to winning ways.

    Not a league game, but Hallen have a golden chance in the FA Vase, fingers crossed, lads! Go out there and show them what Hallen are made of!


    • Westfields vs. Cinderford
    A three-point scramble, Westfields just three points behind Cinderford. It’s like a sprint to the finish, and we all know football sprints are the best kind of sprints! We are confident that the home team will want to wash away the loss at Tuffley last weekend, in fact their last league win was the 27th of December.. anyone growing their hair out for this one?

    Fairman Fires Hat-Trick as Hallen Cruise Past Slimbridge

    Harrison Fairman was simply irresistible on Saturday afternoon as he helped himself to a stunning hat-trick in Hallen’s emphatic victory over Slimbridge.

    The striker opened the scoring in style on 42 minutes after Jack Busby produced a moment of quality, sliding a perfectly timed pass down the left-hand side. Fairman showed electric pace to burst beyond the Slimbridge defence before coolly slotting the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs to give Hallen a deserved lead.

    Not long after the restart, Hallen struck again – and once more it was Fairman on the scoresheet. Luke Jones was the architect this time, delivering another excellent ball down the left flank. Fairman did the rest, finishing confidently into the bottom right corner to double both his tally and Hallen’s advantage.

    The hat-trick was sealed in the 68th minute with a goal worthy of putting the game to bed. Hallen’s top scorer combined brilliantly with skipper Thomas Barker, whose perfectly weighted pass allowed Fairman to lift the ball over the advancing goalkeeper from just inside the box, completing his second hat-trick of the season in emphatic fashion.

    Lewis Powell joins the most exclusive club – Hat-trick Hero’s!

    With hat-tricks suddenly becoming the hottest membership card in town, Lewis Powell has officially added his name to the board — and he did it in style when it mattered most.

    In the heat of the North Bristol Derby against Roman Glass St George, it was Powell who stepped forward to swing the momentum back in Mangotsfield United’s favour. With the visitors trailing, Powell struck on 30 minutes to draw The Field level, calmly finishing to restore belief and settle any early nerves.

    That goal, however, was merely the opening act.

    After the break, Powell went from composed to ruthless. In a blistering seven-minute spell, he added two more goals, completing a superb hat-trick and firmly putting Mangotsfield out of reach of any late Roman Glass comeback.     FA Vase: Nerves of Steel Required

    There was knockout tension in the Isuzu FA Vase, starting at Downton where 190 spectators were treated to a goalless stalemate between the hosts and Slimbridge. Clear chances were at a premium, and with neither side able to break through, penalties were required. Downton kept their composure to edge the shoot-out 4–3 and book their place in the next round — goalkeepers and heart-rate monitors earning their keep.

    Hallen and Hythe & Dibden served up a similar script in front of 110 fans.     The pitch said “no”, the weather said “absolutely not”, and everyone sensibly went home.

    Corsham Town 3–0 Lydney Town (Att: 140)

    Corsham kept it tidy and professional. McCootie opened the scoring, Plummer added a penalty (VAR still unavailable at this level, thankfully), and Freckleton finished things off. Lydney arrived, tried their best, and left with a long journey to reflect.

    Longlevens AFC 0–1 Cirencester Town (Att: 114)

    Theo Jeremy scored after nine minutes and Cirencester then defended like they’d hidden the ball behind the clubhouse. Not pretty, but very effective.
