uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division Leaders Westfields should have been celebrating last weekend when the Hereford based side were odds on favourites to lift the title and gain promotion to step 4 in the Southern League South&West Division.
Westfields were 13 points clear and unbeaten in 26 league games when football came to a halt due to the corona virus. It’s a huge disappointment to potentially miss promotion in our first season in the Hellenic league. Westfields had previously gone so close in the past 6 years twice finishing runners up in the highly competitive Midland Football league to Gresley Rovers then Stratford Town.
This season we had assembled a strong team and our management team of Phil Glover and Paul Willetts had worked so hard and the players had the bit between their teeth for promotion before the FA halted the season. No one can argue that the season had to end but from our point we are all left bitterly disappointed to miss out on promotion for the 3rd time in recent years.
The committee had all worked tirelessly to get the ground ready and secured the required E Grade for promotion.
We then overcame the record flood levels at our ground and refurbishment work has been undertaken and incorporated further improvement then this awful Coronavirus has wiped football away for the foreseeable future which we have to abide by and accept.
Westfields are geared for promotion, a sound club formed on the back of England winning the World Cup in 1966 by Club chief executive Andy Morris and his pals from the Westfields district of Hereford. Morris played , managed, and is still the only secretary the club has had in its 54 year history.
We deserve promotion and we want promotion so we are going to go all out again next season (whenever that may be) to win the Hellenic League.
It was a dream of mine years ago that we have our own ground and get to the Southern League and we have a super set up at allpay.park and will make another determined effort for promotion next season.
Just 4 years ago Westfields reached the 1st round proper of the FA Cup with a 8 match cup run along with Match of the Day coverage , Football Focus live at the ground and Morris appearing on the live FA Cup draw on Match of the Day to give Westfields national coverage.Morris was presented with the Non League Newspaper Lifetime Achievement Award to mark his 50 years at the club after the FA Cup Run.
Over the 54 years the ambitious club have travelled from their club close to the Welsh border to Plymouth in the south, Morpeth in the north, Boston in the east whilst involved in FA Cup and FA Vase games and no end of miles in the Midland League and now Hellenic League
We as a club are geared for promotion. We have an ambitious management team and a group of players majority of which have been together since before our FA Cup giant killing season
And a committee who as a group of volunteers are quite unique by the fact they give superb commitment and take full responsibility to ensuring the club continues to progress on and off the pitch where Westfields have 14 junior teams in addition to a reserve team and the team that drives the club the first team who will be again looking to get the promotion spot next season
