No Decider - 20 December

jody bevan fairford townFairford Town manager Jody Bevan says this weekend’s result against Westfields ‘will not decide anything’ as the two best teams in the uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division meet. Writes Jonny Leighfield Chief sports writer for The Swindon AdvertiserBevan’s men trail their weekend hosts by five points after losing just three of their 15 league matches, while Westfields – who have played the same number of games – are yet to taste defeat and have dropped just four points all campaign.

Fairford will be confident of becoming the first team to inflict defeat on Westfields, however, given their previous league encounter with Ardley United ended in a 7-1 victory. And while Fairford enter the contest in decent form, a fourth league loss of the year would not spell disaster, according to Bevan.

He said: “There’s no getting away from it – it’s top against second in the Premier Division. We’re all looking forward to it. It’s not the be all and end all – the result won’t decide anything – but up to this point in the season, we’re the two best teams in the league. You can dress it up however you want, but ultimately it will come down to who performs best on the day. I’ve not seen too much of Westfields, but everyone I’ve spoken to about them says to me they’re a class act. So it’s going to take a very, very good side to beat them in the league this year.”

Should the worst happen on Saturday and Fairford fall to their hosts, Bevan says he will instruct his team to keep believing their name is on the league title, especially given the fact the two sides must face each other again at Cinder Lane in February..

The worst thing he and his team could do, says Bevan, would be to let one hiccup send their brilliant start down the drain. “Even if we do lose on Saturday, that doesn’t mean I’ll turn around and say to Westfields: ‘There is the league, go and have it easy’,” said Bevan. "I want us to push them all the way and if they’re the best team then all the very best to them. I just want us to go out there and perform to the best of our ability because second place in the league is important this season. We have a chance of going up as either champions or as one of the best second-placed teams or through a play-off, and I want us to take it.”
