Oxfordshire youngster James Callan became the youngest goalkeeper ever to appear in the National Conference when he came on just before half time for Barnet to replace the injured Aymen Azaze against league leaders Sutton United on 27 April 2021. Although he conceded one goal in a 1-0 defeat, Barnet were full of praise for his performance. He is the only 16 year old keeper to ever appear in the Conference, and fourth on the list of youngest keepers is Jordan Pickford. Letcombe cannot find any record of any 16 year old keeper ever playing in the Premiership, Championship or EFL.
James is also registered for Division Two South side Letcombe F C in the Hellenic league. He played for the Oxfordshire Schools under 16 team which was managed by Letcombe secretary Des Williams. Des knew that James had been at the Barnet academy for many years, but the club folded their academy in 2020. Letcombe knew that keeper Danny Joyce was not available for three weeks back in September, so Des phoned Mr Callan to ask who James was playing for.
The answer was "nobody", and despite the long journey from his home in Long Crendon, James played for Letcombe in two pre-season friendlies and was due to make his Hellenic league debut for them in the cup at Adderbury.
Two days before the game, James was told that he would be on the bench for Barnet, and chose them rather than Letcombe!!
Letcombe have joked that they allowed him to go on loan to Barnet to gain experience!! We would like to congratulate him on his achievement and to wish him every success in his future career.
