All Change At Woodstock Town - 27 June

Woodstock Town are pleased to announce the new management structure at the uhlsport Hellenic League Division Two club for the coming season.

Following the departure of Phil Parker from the Development Team, Bob Ward has stepped up to the newly created role of Director of Football. Bob will oversee the footballing side and direction of the club including both men’s senior teams and the move towards regarding Charter Club status over the next year. Bob is a real football man, being involved for a number of years with Kidlington FC before coming over to Woodstock two years ago. “I can’t wait to get started in my new role” says Ward. “It’s a bit different to what I’ve done in the past but with the knowledge and resources at the club, along with developments coming over the next couple of years, I want to be a part of ensuring that Woodstock has a club to be proud of. Woodstock is a great Town and it deserves a football club to match. If the community gets behind us in this project, there is no limit to what we can achieve”.

Last seasons management team remains in situ for the 1st team with Matty Pike and Liam Walker continuing for the 2019-2020 season. They will be joined by the former Hanborough Manager Chris Doyle who makes the step up from the Oxfordshire Senior League to the Hellenic. Chris had been involved with our near neighbours since the age of 14, progressing through playing into management and has been in charge for the one of the most successful periods in their history, winning the Witney and District League and the OFA Junior Shield in the process.

“It was a difficult decision but in the end, head ruled heart and it was too good an opportunity to pass up. Just being around the club feels good, you really get to see the attention for detail and hard work that goes on behind the scenes. It’s a shame that the football last season didn’t match up but there are some great players here and lessons have been learnt which is evident from the approach to pre season. I’ve got every confidence that I can contribute to the management and coaching team and help turn things around on the pitch.

Callum Oliver replaces Phil Parker as the Manager of the Development Team. Joe Knight will combine playing with acting as his assistant. Callum will look to appoint another assistant in the next few weeks with Ian Whelan stepping in for the interim.

Club Chairman Neil Roberts feels that the club is going in the right direction. “There is a positivity around the club at the moment and anything feels possible. The new appointments are just the icing on the cake. We met as a committee and dissected last season and realised that as a club, we got things wrong which impacted our season and the poor results. We’ve learned our lessons and have taken positive action”.

On the appointments, the chairman added “Bob (Ward) is a club man through and through and his knowledge has been indispensable. He wants to elevate the club to the next level and that fits with everyone’s ambitions. Chris Doyle has done amazing things at Hanborough with limited support and resources. He will be a good fit for the club and I know that he is impressed with what he has seen already. We’re hoping he’s the missing ingredient to help us turn the corner”.

On preparations for the season ahead, Mr Roberts was equally enthusiastic. “I’ve been meeting with everyone over the summer, even prior to Chris (Doyle) coming on board and there is a real togetherness. Pre season preparations last season were not what we would have wanted, and that was in no way the fault of that management, but it did impact on their ability to attract and retain players which in turn impacted results. The coaching staff have made sure that won’t happen this year with Liam, Matty and Bob setting out their very comprehensive plan for pre season as soon as last season ended. And despite losing some players from the Development Team, our open training session was a massive success and we have managed to recruit more players than we have done over the last few years, with more players still to come in. We’ve even had interest from a Spanish semi professional player who is coming to Woodstock for work and would like to join us”
