Malvern Town goalkeeper, Keiron Blackburn, played his part the 'Hillsider's' team of heroes at the weekend as his crucial penalty save in the shoot-out set them on the way to a 6-5 sudden death victory over higher level Sporting Khalsa.
“It was an absolute roller-coaster,” he said. “When you thought it was over, something else happened to keep the game going, even in the penalty shoot-out!
“Penalties are always a gamble, but the confidence this team has at the minute is incredible. I never thought we’d lose the shoot-out and that’s what I said to the boys just before it; I wouldn’t swap a single one of their lads for ours. The support we had was also unbelievable. It gives us such a boost, especially in these big games. The atmosphere was electric and it says it all when even their players were clapping our support at the end. We’re very lucky to have them.”
We now face an away tie at Congleton Town of the North West Counties League Premier Division on January 9th. Any tie at this stage of the competition would be difficult,” added Blackburn. “You need more than luck to get this far, so we just need to believe in what we are doing here. Congleton will be as tough, if not tougher than Sporting Khalsa, but the pressure will be on them. No-one likes to lose against a team from the level below.”
As we come to the end of a tough year for the World, Blackburn is hopeful that good times lie ahead for the club
