No Option Against Enforced Relegation - 23 May

The Oxford Mail report's three Oxfordshire clubs in the Uhlsport Hellenic League have voiced their disappointment after being forced into relegation.

Headington Amateurs, Letcombe and Woodstock Town will drop out of Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 West next season. Their hand has been forced by new Football Association rulings – one of which states all grounds at that level must have floodlights for the 2018/19 campaign.

They are all set to be placed in Division 2 when the league structures are announced today. The FA Leagues Committee notified clubs about the requirement for floodlights at the start of the 2015/16 season, initially setting a two-year deadline before extending it to include the 2017/18 campaign.

“The FA have been trying to do this for several years, but now they’ve said ‘no we’re going through with it’.” Woodstock vice-chairman Neil Roberts said the club have had applications to install floodlights at their New Road ground refused three times. He added: “At the level we play at, floodlights are not essential. We’re not happy about it at all. We have everything but the floodlights.”

Letcombe are unable to meet another new rule – the construction of a safe walkway – due to a cricket pitch separating the clubhouse and football facilities. After strong opposition, the club have promised locals no floodlights will be installed at their Bassett Road ground.

Secretary Des Williams said: “We can’t get lights – there would be such ill-feeling. It’s a night sky area and they want an unobstructed view of the ground. I don’t know where we go, we’ve asked to drop down to Division 2, whether we lose players or not we will have to wait and see. We have proper drainage and some grounds with lights are are under water.“What is more important, lights or a pitch that is playable?”

Brian King, CEO of the Uhlsport Hellenic League, said: “Unfortunately, some clubs have not been able to get planning approval for floodlights with, I would say, some bizarre reasons why they can’t. Realistically we have clubs that have now accepted the situation we have got and we move on from there.

curtis woodhouse hellenic league dinner 1 june 2018Presentation Evening Speaker - 9 May

The speaker for the Annual Presentation evening at the Kassam Stadium on June 1 is former professional footballer turned professional boxer and football manager Curtis Woodhouse, who has a unique story to tell.

Curtis played football as a central midfielder and competed as a light-welterweight boxer. He is a former British light-welterweight champion. His football career spanned across nine seasons, playing in the Premier League for Birmingham City and winning four England U21 caps. His professional boxing record stands at 29 fights 22 wins – 13 of which were by knock-out – and 7 defeats.

Manager of Northern Counties East League Premier Division Bridlington Town AFC, Curtis is an outspoken character whose autobiography – Box to Box: From the Premier League to British Boxing Champion – charts his remarkable dual sporting career.

Step 5 to Step 4 Promotion - 26 April

The Chairman of the FA League’s Committee has provided further information today and an item of note for member clubs in the Premier Division.

“The position concerning vacancies at the end of season was clarified. Vacancies at STEP 3 would be filled by the losing Step 4 play-off finalists on a points per game basis.

Vacancies at Step 4 would be filled, firstly by the TWO CLUBS at Step 5 who otherwise wouldn’t have been promoted. Any further vacancy would be dealt with on an invitation basis to those clubs ranked at third in each Step 5 league on a points per game basis.”

Various Matters - 25 April

Uhlsport Hellenic League Chief Executive Brian King advises on various matters appertaining to next season.

  1. 1.       Season 2017-2018
Hopefully by Saturday 28th APRIL we should know the destination of the PREMIER & ONE EAST & WEST titles and runners-up. Division TWO EAST & WEST is scheduled to be completed on Monday 30th APRIL.

I would like, on behalf of the UHL Management Team to thank clubs for your assistance in achieving the target finish date including a SEVEN DAY extension from that set at the start of season. The weather from November through to March was a major frustration to all concerned and although there were some clubs that felt hard done by and that an extension should have been made to the league playing season. Thankfully those clubs were in the minority with the majority of member clubs accepting the weather interference and worked with League Officers to ensure they met the UHL completion date.

Thank you very much to those who have worked with Mike Markham, in his first season as UHL Fixture Co-ordinator. I do not believe he will have a more exacting task in however many seasons he is in post. We have already discussed some aspects in the programming of season 2018-2019 in general detail. However, if member clubs have positive thoughts on how we are better able to manage the seasons program I would be pleased to have your views.

  1. 2.       Promotion & Relegation

It is likely that the Champion & Runner-up in the PREMIER Division will be promoted to STEP 4 for season 2018-2019 and congratulations are offered by the UHL Management to THATCHAM TOWN & BRACKNELL TOWN. Both clubs still have further targets in mind prior to the end of season with the FA Vase Final on 20th MAY at Wembley. But prior to Thatcham’s FA Vase final we have the clash of the Premier Titans on MONDAY 7th MAY when the Champions clash with the 2nd Place club, Thatcham Town v Bracknell Town at Windsor FC, kick off 3.00PM. Let’s give the two clubs a great send off with a great final.

At this time there is little that can be said about promotion from ONE East & West or relegation from the Premier, except that the bottom club, Burnham FC, will be relegated. Others may join them but this will not be resolved until the FA are able to indicate the placements in Step 5 & 6 following all final positions being known including all lateral movements required to ensure STEP 5 Divisions have 20 Member Clubs.

Ardley United will replace Burnham in the Premier Division at this time. Other promotions are not yet decided and will be very much governed by final placements and lateral movement.

  1. 3.       Step 6 Non-Compliance
During the 2017-2018 season the UHL Chairman and myself have attended ‘Confidential’ meetings with FA Staff Officers and members of the FA League’s Committee to discuss various issues pertaining to the UHLSPORT Hellenic League. At this moment in time the only information I am able to advise you of is regarding clubs that will be removed from One EAST and WEST. All comments below are to be ratified and confirmed by the FA
  1. a.       Chalfont Wasps Have elected to be placed in Hellenic TWO or Spartan South Midlands Division TWO.
  2. b.      Headington Amat’s, Letcombe & Woodstock Town Have all indicated they would not wish to be placed in the possible options of Step 7 Competitions available within the UHL footprint and would be happy to be included in UHL Division TWO, as a Step 7, or, as is the present format but outside of the National League System.
  3. c.       Penn & Tylers Green An appeal is being written and will be submitted to the Secretary of State for the Department of the Environment to hopefully overturn the rejection of the clubs planning application. A one season ground share has been approved by the FA whilst the appeal is being considered
  4. d.      Wokingham & Emmbrook Club has been granted Planning Approval for all aspects to attain Step 6 compliance. Club are attaining funds needed but works are unlikely to be completed for the start of season 2018-2019. Full details have been passed to the FA to review and consider.
  1. 4.       Presentation Evening
This season’s event will, once again, be held at the Kassam Stadium, Oxford on, as previously advised, FRIDAY 1st JUNE, negotiations are ongoing regards this season’s speaker and will be advised as soon as possible. Member clubs will be invoiced shortly for £140, which will include places for FOUR attendee’s at the function. Additional places will be available at a cost of £37.50.
  1. 5.       Pre-Season Seminar & Annual General Meeting
This event will once again be held at Burford School, Oxfordshire on SUNDAY 8th JULY commencing at 10.20AM, booking in from 10.00AM. A program will be issued as soon as speakers are confirmed.

There will be an AM & PM session for Club Coaches and Managers.

Regards
Brian King
Chief Executive UHLSPORT Hellenic League

Melledew Hails Thatcham's Timing In FA Vase Success - 25 March
Andrew Simpson Northwich Guardian Senior Sports Writer

Tom Melledew Thatcham Town CaptainTom Melledew, Thatcham Town’s captain, said the timing of his side’s goals was perfect after an FA Vase semi-final success against 1874 Northwich on Saturday. The Kingfishers arrived at Wincham Park with a slender lead following a 1-0 win in the first leg seven days earlier. They added two goals to their tally inside half an hour of the teams’ second meeting, and replied almost instantly with another after their hosts threatened to fight back.

“Even with a script it couldn’t have gone better,” he said afterwards. “All week we’d been saying that we wanted to get an early goal if we could, and it settled our nerves when we did. To score again so soon after half-time, which settled it really, was perfect timing.”

Gavin James, a replacement for Ross Cook – last week’s match-winner – who had succumbed to a hamstring injury, was on target twice for Thatcham in the first half. Scott McGowan’s penalty shortly before the break briefly reignited the home team’s hopes before Shane Cooper-Clark dashed them again with a stunning strike early in the second period. It rendered (1874) captain Matthew Woolley’s firm header a consolation when 1874 found the net again.

Melledew said: “I think we deserve to go through. Perhaps it was a cheap penalty that we conceded – I don’t know – but it was unbelievable to then score again quickly. We had been on the ropes before half-time, and that settled us back down again. I’m lost for words a little bit because it’s a dream to finish the job we started last week and to get to Wembley.”

Thatcham have now avoided a defeat in their past 29 matches in all competitions, and no opponent has beaten them away from home since Banbury United on September 16. Melledew quipped: “We’ve forgotten how to lose, but it’s not a bad habit to have is it?”

Highmoor-Ibis v Bracknell Town Abandoned - 14 December

Following the abandonment of this match an investigation of the circumstances that caused the early curtailment were investigated by the Uhlsport Hellenic League Management Executive.

The Uhlsport Hellenic League are advised that charges were issued to two Highmoor-Ibis players only and that the club were not disputing the charges.

Given the circumstances the League Executive have made a decision to exclude Highmoor-Ibis from the Perpetua Press Floodlit Challenge Cup competition for season 2017-2018, as it is accepted that Highmoor-Ibis player/s were wholly responsible for causing the abandonment of the match.

Bracknell Town will now play in the 3rd Round tie to be played at Didcot Town FC. Highmoor-Ibis has the right of appeal to the FA if they do not accept this decision.

Charitable Donation - 14 November

Uhlsport Hellenic League referee, Drew Warren, recently completed the Oxford Half Marathon in aid of the Stroke Association.

As well as regularly officiating on Hellenic matches Drew has represented ‘England Veteran’s football team at Under 60 & 65’s over ten times.

The picture shows Drew receiving a cheque from Uhlsport Hellenic League Administration Secretary Angela King, making a very generous donation of £250.00 from the league charity fund towards the £1800.00 Drew has raised so far.

Drew completed the run in a time of 2hr 0m 44 sec. A reasonable time for a 68 year old’s first half marathon. It’s still not too late to support Drew and the Stroke Association, by donating at Drew’s, ‘Just Giving’ page.

fraser haines highworth town presented with award by brian king Double Presentation At Highworth - 23 October

Two awards were presented on Saturday at The Elms, a Meritorious Service award to Fraser Haines Secretary of Highworth Town and for the second month in succession the ‘Premier’ Division ‘Team of the Month’.

Fraser Haines has been involved in football locally for over forty years and is still the mainstay of his club. He started playing for Highworth Town Junior section in 1979 then progressed through to the club youth section playing in the Swindon Borough League. He then moved up to the reserves playing in the Reserve Section West in 1986. In 1989 he started playing for Highworth Town 1st team and played in the team that was promoted to the Hellenic Premier Division in the early 1990’s.

He also combined playing with the role of secretary of Highworth Town until 2000 when he retired with injuries finally taking their toll upon him. Fraser carried on with his role as secretary and as the main organiser of the clubs’ junior tournament, 2017 is the 25th year that Fraser has run the tournament raising over £250,000 for the club in that time.

He has also enjoyed many discussions with Match Officials over the seasons based on decisions made in matches with a totally unbiased stance, from his perspective. Without doubt the game would be poorer without characters such as Fraser who is a 100% club supporter.

Fraser pictured (left) was presented with his award by Uhlsport Hellenic League Chief Executive Brian King.

For the second month in succession Highworth were also awarded the team of the month award. The award is presented monthly to the best performing team in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division and the combined Division One East and West.

The management team of Jeff Roberts (right) and Tony Brown (left) are pictured along with Brian King.

August Team Of The Month Winners - 27 September

bill deach craig adey uhlsport team of month august 1tHighworth Town won the award for the Premier Divison in August along with Ardley United for the Division One teams.

Bill Beach is pictured presenting the Division One Award to Ardley United's manager Craig Adey prior to Tuesday night's Floodlit Cup game against Bicester Town.

The award is presented monthly to the best performing team in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division and the combined Division One East and West.

Performance is calculated for each month of the season, with the production of a league table based in games played in the respective divisions along with FA Cup, FA Vase, and Hellenic League Cup games - it does not include County FA cup games or any external other cup a team may have entered.

A very important part of the final table produced for each month is a deduction of points for the number of bookings accrued during play. 1 point deducted for each yellow card - 2 points for a double yellow sending off in a game - 4 points for a straight red - 10 points for a mass melee. The monthly total of those points are averaged against the number of games played. So effectively in any month a team could be top of the table having won every game, but end up bottom by not applying to the rules of the game.

The Full information is then provided to each member of the Uhlsport Hellenic League committee to make a final vote.
