Who Is That Vision Of Power & Muscle? - 23rd October

The vision of power and muscle is a very fine dragster, taking the stress of Abingdon Town chairman Tom Larman in the pilots seat!

Both Tom and his better half Wendy, families have a history of racing at Santa Pod and now he too harbours those dreams and is re-building a car with brother in law Mark, to grace Santa Pod and tear down the magic strip. In fact he has dedicated the car to both his and Wendy's fathers who were both involved in the sport in times past.

Having popped over to Town earlier this month, just as a game was starting, Tom grabbed me by the arm and urged me towards one of the buildings in the ground. Excitedly saying. " Forget the football, come and see this. . . come on see this". Opening the door to the building, with a smile on his face that could have charmed Brian King (well perhaps not!), his eyes glazed over as he unveiled his pride and joy. From there we spent the next 15 minutes talking about drag racing not a word of football was mentioned. From now on Tom would like to be known as "Big Daddy", nothing to do with his physique or an ever growing family, but in reverence to the patriach of the Drag Racing world Don Garlits.

All I can say is. "What a marvellous beast . . . the car that is".

Abingdon Town Press Officer, Kenny More, commented. "You can see in the picture the car is nearly ready, it might need a bigger roll cage and it might help if Tom raced whilst not eating a Burger, also someone ought to tell him your not allowed to tow a caravan with it, but one thing at a time I guess".
